Hippocrates Health Clinic: Antony Chatham Part 4

by Hippocrates Health Educator

From the Hippocrates Institute Clinic, Antony Chatham answers questions submitted by you, the listeners.

In part 4 of the live call with Hippocrates Health Institute, we continue our discussion:

Could you comment some more about keeping silence?

Antony shares about the benefits of silence and the Buddhist perspective that emptiness is fullness.

If I could take it one step further than I did on the call, I strongly recommend the practice of a day of silence.

What is a day of silence? I first came across the idea at the Hippocrates Health Institute. Once a week juice fasting is recommended. On this day, you drink so much nutrition in the juice, you don’t even feel hungry. But if you want to take the experience to another level, you can also choose this day as a day of silence.

Your body has slown down as you are not expecting it to do all the hard work of digestion. At the same time, you can go inward and take this opportunity to be quiet, to observe a day of silence.

Can you comment on the emotional freedom technique (eft)?

Eft is an excellent technique especially because you can do it on yourself. Eft combines the knowledge of chinese meridians and the power of suggestion. This can help us as there are many things we may need to unlearn to have a healthy mind and body.

I have so many things to deal with, a major move coming up -- do you have any tips to help focus and calm my being and my mind?

Having a regular practice of any discipline that helps you to focus and calm yourself can be very helpful.

For example, the positive effects of yoga: it helps to focus and calm the mind. Tai chi exercises and various tai chi movements is another example. Another one is chi gong.

The Hippocrates Institute program includes various exercises you can choose to participate in. These include water aerobics, yoga, tai chi exercises, chi gong, various forms of guided meditation, rebounder classes, pilates, and many other workouts. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to try these different practices and see what you like.

Whether you use chi gong, tai chi exercises or one of the many forms of yoga: all have many positive effects. The real question is what works best for you that you can enjoy doing on a consistent basis. We are all different and are drawn to different things.

The key is to find what works for you and incorporate it into a daily or almost daily practice.

Guided meditation and other forms of transcendental meditation is also a very good tool.

Antony comments that a lot of research has been done by Herbert Benson from the Mind Body Center at Harvard University. It definitely shows that if you can learn to do exercises to focus and calm yourself, you will improve your health and your heart health. Dr. Benson is a cardiologist.

Please take the opportunity to thank Antony if you’ve found this wonderful time he has taken with us to be helpful. Just leave a comment below.
