Dr. Bernie Siegel Answers Your Questions About Survival Behavior In Dealing With Serious Illness

by Hippocrates Health Educator

We are honored to host Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, MD on our next ASK the Expert call to be held on Wednesday, January 13th at 9:00 PM U.S. Eastern time zone.

Bernie, as he likes to be called, retired from the practice of surgery in 1989, because by that time as he explains in his book Love, Medicine & Miracles – more health care professionals were willing to listen to his message about healing and surviving.

Dr. Bernie Siegel, MD

Dr. Bernie Siegel, MD

In 1978 he originated Exceptional Cancer Patients, a specific form of individual and group therapy utilizing patients’ drawings, dreams, images and feelings. ECaP is based on “carefrontation,” a safe, loving therapeutic confrontation, which facilitates personal lifestyle changes, personal empowerment and healing of the individual’s life. The physical, spiritual and psychological benefits which followed led to his desire to make everyone aware of his or her own healing potential. He realized exceptional behavior is what we are all capable of.

This is a unique opportunity for you to ask Bernie your most burning question about the potential every human being has in dealing with disease and the survival behavior that is required to take back your health.

Whatever you do, don’t miss this chance to benefit from Bernie’s rare blend of intensive clinical experience with thousands of patients, rigorous professional training, and down-in-the-trenches experience.

Go ahead and submit your question down below. Questions are asked in order of submission, so the sooner you submit your question the better your chances are that we will get to ask it.

I hope to hear you on the call.

Thanks for the opportunity to ask a question. I had an endoscopy lately and have what's called diverticulitis. I have a continuous mild pain or discomfort on the lower left side of my abdomen just abt 2 inches above where my leg joins my body. Could this be connected and also will the hippocrates diet help me. My mother died of blockage in her bowel (blood vessels ceased working I think) I also have a goitre but no sign of underactive thyroid showed in blood test. Is it all connected?

    Hi Bernie,
I have been diagnosed with Lyme's Disease 3 1/2 years ago and continue to have many symptoms that cause a great deal of disruption in my life. I have read a great deal of material indicating that physical issues that manifest as immune related illnesses are often related to emotional pain and trauma. My illness has served as a time when I have experienced many fascinating dreams in which I am reworking or reframing past trauma in my life. I'm interested in your thoughts.

I have hear that it is bad to live near a highpower CL&P line. I am about 600 to 700 ft away. Should I move. I have been here about 38 yrs and the lines have come in during that time. There was no way to fight them.

Hi Bernie. Is Carrot juice with rasberries good for cancer patients?
  • hiplifestyle
No, definitely not because of the sugar.

    Hello Dr Siegel,

In your opinion, what are the top 3 mind/body therapies to help/boost the immune system?

    Thanks,
  • Caroline
    One question for Dr Siegel:
I believe that deep healing is impossible without a profound inner transformation: emotionally, mentally, physically, and a transformation of the entire belief system and the way one looks at oneself. What do you think about this and what is your experience?

    Many thanks

Hi, I have a nutrition related question...according to Gabe Mirkin, MD, expert in sports nutrition and Fellow of Johns Hopkins, "dietary modification cannot change the acidity of any part of the body including blood, only the urine" am I reading this wrong, or is the whole acid/alkyline balance a myth??

    Dear Dr.Bernie,

What sort of experience have you had with type 1 diabetes. Personally, I no longer believe it is 'incurable', however I would appreciate any advice you may have towards healing of this condition.

    Thank you.
  • hiplifestyle
Dr. Brian Clement shared from his experience in http://www.hippocrateshealthlifestyle.com/287/d... I totally agree it is not incurable.

My Mom is a Type II diabetic and experiemnted for a few weeks on and off with a raw food diet day. She has noticed that some mornings (before breakfast), her sugar levels have appeared to have increased overnight, even though she has eaten only light foods, though around 7-8pn. What would be causing this?

    Thanks so much.

I am scheduled for surgery to remove my gall bladder, I have a stone. I also have a hiatel hernia which gives me a sour stomach (acid reflux)feeling. I am taking probiotics and was taking aloe juice, which hasn't helped, so I stopped. I am experiencing belching fequently and am not eating dairy now as it seems to bother me. Once my gall bladder is out I hope the gasiness will subside and I won't feel so bloated. What do you think?

Would you say there is a do xyz for healing and surviving or does it vary greatly depending on what people are dealing with? What's your favorite activity in your life?
  • theresacarruthers
Is apple cider vinegar in water good to take after a meal?
  • Naomi
For the person posting about fear and anxiety, I've found that gluten intolerance increases anxiety and fear. It takes a while to get all the gluten out of your system but you'll feel so much better.

    Bernie,

My father was ill for a year with pancreatitis and he said the most annoying thing people would say is to "stay positive", he said he was miserable and the last thing you feel is positive. I'm wondering how do you "stay positive" in misery and if it makes a difference with your healing rate? I'm also wondering what's the best thing to say to someone who's ill. He recovered when the stone finally dislodged. I also hear a lot of people say they will "fight" the cancer but seems like you'd want to work with your cancer, help it go away?

These water machines which make ionized mineral water are very expensive. Do you believe in them and are they good for the body? I drink distilled water.
  • theresacarruthers
What kind of acidophilus or probiotic do you believe in and what other means can I use to rid myself of parasites?
  • izzykonopa
Hi Bernie, I am starting out on a raw food diet and am wondering how much I should eat to maintain good health. I am 5'8" and 145lbs and pretty active. Also, how can I be sure I'm getting all the nutrition I need to stay healthy.
  • izzykonopa
Hi Bernie, thanks for taking the time to talk with us. I dont have any serious physical health problems but I do suffer alot from anxiety and fear, which can be just as debilitating. What measures can I take to overcome this problem?
    Thank You,

    Izzy K.

Dr Siegel, where would a newbie begin with meditation? What if there is a serious health issue that is on their mind constantly and it's even hard to destress?

I have osteoarthritis in my right hand ( fingers). I had surgery on my right wrist (De Quervain's release) in September of 2008. I am taking silica gel twice a day, also omega 3 with no relief. What would you suggest to relieve the stiffness in fingers. Thanks

How can we grow sprouts in the East climate when there is very little sun some days and its cold in the house?
  • theresacarruthers
Living in the East, it is very cold and a raw diet is not very appealing now. Because of this, do you advocate a raw diet all year long?
  • theresacarruthers
What is the best way to rid the colon of a lot of mucous?

Hi Terry, all great questions for our next coaching call!
  • Nicole
I have water fasted for 30 days some months ago to improve my health and still found that my belly area was less than flat at that time. Today I have regained lost weight and feel fine but cannot get rid of this stubborn protruding belly. Any ideas. Thank you.
  • Nicole
How can I clear myself of recurring painful thoughts. The experience was emotionally painful and now I find myself waking up at night with the same feelings of outrage and resentment and cannot seem to leave it all in the past. I know about Emotional Freedom Technique and tapping but this has not helped (may be I am not doing it right). Can you suggest any specific steps to take? I have developed a painful burning sensation in my right shoulder from this experience, a spot which becomes more acute each time these emotions resurface. I really want to be done with this. Thank you so much.

Is Synthoid dangerous, and what can you do otherwise?
  • hiplifestyle
Yes, it is. http://www.hippocrateshealthlifestyle.com/593/p..., you'll find a really good video where Dr. Brian speaks about getting people off it. Members: you have to log out of the membership area to access the rest of the site.

What would your advice be for one who has osteoporosis and is too young and wants to get rid of it? I am doing T-Tapp exercise, XC ski, snowshoe, walk, mini trampoline, take state of the art supplements, including cal,D,K2,omegaIII,Prime Balance with bonistein? What else can I do??
  • hiplifestyle
Not sure if you made it, but we discussed exactly what Dr. Brian Clement teaches for osteoporosis in our last members' coaching call. I'm very familiar with this as a test showed that I need to increase my bone density before I get osteoporosis.
  • MARY ELLEN COTA
Can you please give a few examples of a full day's meals for, say traveling to a week long training for business and, say, an all day mountain hike? Foods that are no fuss, no muss, complete nutritional req., back packable ? And how much would one need for a 16 hr hike? What would YOU take? Thanks so much.
  • MARY ELLEN COTA
Where can one go to have tests done to tell you exactly what your body is doing wrong and why and how to fix it? Somewhere fast that doesn't take referral after referral?
  • MARY ELLEN COTA
What does a 24 hr urine test that comes back twice, saying there is no measurable calcium in the urine indicate? This is after having taken 1200to 1500mg calcium w/ magnesium daily?
  • MARY ELLEN COTA
What is your opinion of Kangen water machine by Enagic, ie: alkaline water? I really want to get it. And what about distilled water: I heard that it is stripped of everything so it attracts the minerals you have in your body and robs them. True? Is it good for you?
  • hiplifestyle
Great question for our next coaching call on Saturday. (to all - Dr. Bernie has specialized in the mental/emotional part of healing for several decades so we asked him all the questions we could get in related to that).
