A listener had read somewhere that buckwheat sprouts are toxic – create toxins in the body. She liked having buckwheat cereal and wanted to know if this was actually the case.
I asked Dr. Brian Clement, director of Hippocrates Health Institute in our live conference call.
“I don’t know where she read that buckwheat sprouts are toxic. Buckwheat is the original cupboard crop that white Anglo-Saxons in Europe put down on the ground to fertilize their soil.
Buckwheat also, out of all foods known to man, has the highest lecithin levels, so the sclerosis, the arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis disease we spoke about before – raw green buckwheat sprouts grown for seven days on soil are terrific for that.
Buckwheat is not really a grain. For the lack of trying to confuse everything in the world of your mind, we tell you it’s a grain. It really, botanically, is a fruit. Now don’t let that freak you out. I’m not gonna tell you not to eat it because it’s a fruit. It’s a rare form of a fruit. It’s a fruiting plant that basically puts this little fruit out. And it acts like a grain, and digests like a grain. It’s an extremely healthy fruit, and we’ve certainly been using it for over 53 years with great success. And we haven’t seen anyone die from that but we’ve seen people die from a lot of other things.”
Wow, finally, a really healthy fruit! That buckwheat is actually a fruit was news to me. But speaking of healthy fruit, I get so many questions regarding fruit that I want to talk a little here about it.
I’ve been on the raw plant-based food journey for 7 years now. At first, I followed the teachings of David Wolfe and ate tons of fruit. I was having a really good time with all the great fruit available here in Florida.
But after being raw for about 18 months, I just wasn’t feeling very good. I figured it wasn’t working for me.
Now I know that it was all the sugar I was consuming: yes, the sugar in fruit hits the blood chemistry the same as any other sugar. In fact, I developed hypoglycemia, and it’s taken me a long time to bring my blood sugar levels back to normal.
The truth is there are millions of us with blood sugar issues, and fruit has too much sugar. So the only healthy fruit besides buckwheat, is avocado and tomato. I’ve read that 100 years ago, fruit was not at all sweet. Man has made it so sweet because it sells better.
